Goal of the symposium

The basic goal of the symposium is to reflect on the current state of librarianship in Slovakia and abroad, outline the development of library science and practice in the near future, and name new challenges in the hypermodern domain. This is referred to as a time of paradoxes - on the one hand, culture is the highest of the company's values, on the other hand, its funding is undersized. On the one hand there is […]

Tobacco factory Kulturfabrik

Gorkého 2, Košice, Slovakia

The story of today's Tabačka Kulturfabrik began to be written in 2009 in the so-called old Tabačka. Peter Radkoff and a team of collaborators from the civic association Bona Fide breathed new life into the abandoned space of the former tobacco factory. At first, they created an alternative cultural space in one of the buildings by themselves and at their own expense. Today it is known as Fabricafe and until now it has preserved the genia loci and the original atmosphere.

About the project

Libraries have a rich history behind them. You can't live on that alone. It seems that in this age, which is full of paradoxes, we are more than ever facing the challenge of how to proceed. Naturally, answers are not easy to find, decisions for the future even more difficult. The current position and vision of libraries from the point of view of modernist traditions is uncertain, in the end like everything. It is certain that the transformation based on the transformation of the company will not bypass our practice and the services provided. In order to grasp the challenges of today's world, we must grasp it in all its breadth. For our next steps and planning, we must take into account sociological, philosophical, but also ethical aspects and mechanisms of society's functioning in combination with our professional tradition. The symposium is generally devoted to the issue of the place of libraries in the hypermodern era, taking into account challenges such as digimodernism, artificial intelligence, inequality at the global level, climate crisis, etc. in the context of domestic and global trends. In order to ask basic questions and outline possible answers, the preparatory committee established the areas that are the most important for us in today's situation - profession, innovation and client.
